"How long does a ticket you receive in a commercial vehicle with a CDL license stay on your record in the state of WA for insurance purposes?"

Normally insurance companies will check your driving record for the previous three years. This is for a CDL truck driver or for someone with a regular drivers license.

The main difference is between someone that only drives their personal car and someone that drives a company vehicle or truck. Insurance carriers are checking company drivers on a yearly basis while they may or may not for other drivers.

This means that the company's insurance carrier is dictating who can and cannot drive a company vehicle and they have become much more restrictive in the last few years. The current limit seems to be three minor tickets or two serious in three years and you lose your job.

3 years. 5 years total. Company's can only go back 3 years without your written consent. Technically you don't have to let them have the 5 year but then they don't have to insure you OR the truck company also. Kind of a catch 22. Your commercial license and "personal" license are the same. You get a ticket in your truck it is still part of your personal license and vise a versa.

Be aware.... For ANY commercial license in any state....

For years roadside and scale inspections, as well as crash data has been compiled and maintained on two internet systems called SAFER and SAFESTAT. These are the data systems that insurance companies, shippers and local federal authorities go to determine the safety rating of a commercial trucking company. These two systems were phased out in July 2010 and combined into CSA2010 (Comprehensive Safety Analysis 2010).

SAFER and SAFESTAT both compiled driver and vehicle violation data listed under the name of the company responsible for the operation of the vehicle being driven. CSA2010 will continue to assign this information to the company but will also sort and assign these violations to the individual driver of the vehicle at the time of the inspection.

Violations such as air/hydraulic hoses chaffing, inoperable lights, pintle hook not latched, low or flat tires, exhaust leaks, oil leaks, missing lug nuts, etc, will all have assigned points. Moving violations also have assigned points. If a driver is stopped for a moving violation such as speeding, following too close, etc, and not necessarily cited but given an inspection report instead (Uniform Driver/Vehicle Inspection), this violation WILL appear on the driver's CSA2010 record, as well as your companies CSA2010 record. Points will then be assigned and accumulated under the company's name for any inspection of the vehicle she/he was driving at the time of inspection.

The FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) will hold companies accountable for these records, but will also be holding the driver accountable for their violations also, something they didn't do before.

The CSA2010 and your DMV record IS separate as far as your drivers license moving violations system is concerned.

Basically, CSA2010 compiles ANY SAFTY violation information, moving violations included. If you get pulled over for ANYTHING, speeding, tail light out, etc, and they just give you an inspection report and they put the reason for stopping you on it and just slap your wrist and say get it fixed or slow down and don't give you a ticket, you are still dinged x-amout of points on your CSA2010 record. NOT your DMV record. It does not affect your drivers license.

It just means that the Feds can give your trucking company a bad CSA2010 rating and the INSURANCE companies will look at that and tell the truck company not to hire you because you have too many points on the CSA2010 system. Even though you have a good DMV record. Your CSA2010 drivers record still stays with you when you go to apply for another company. The trucking company and the Insurance company can look up your CSA2010 record at anytime. I don't know if there's a time limit like the DMV record or not.
