How long it takes depends on where you got tested, what tests were done, and the day of the week. For fastest service, find a provider that does a large volume of tests, has an electronic interface with the lab, and provides a patient portal for quick patient viewing of reviewed results.

Test Site

  • Some Departments of Health and hospitals do some testing in-house. These tests are usually limited to gonorrhea or chlamydia tests, and possibly wet smears to check for trichomoniasis. If they aren't sending out the tests, the results will be back in one to three days, depending on the type of test.
  • GYN offices, family planning offices, and primary care providers will generally send out test specimens to a lab, which may be local or may involve shipping to an off-site lab provider. In some cases, tests for hepatitis or herpes may be shipped again from the lab to a specialty lab, which can take longer.

Tests Done

  • Results of rapid HIV testing and rapid hepatitis C testing will be available within the hour.
  • Results of chlamydia and gonorrhea swabs will be available in 24-48 hours, although the results may take longer to travel from the lab to the medical office. In the unlikely event that a gonorrhea or chlamydia culture will done, the specimen will need a few days in the lab before results can be reported.
  • Blood tests for syphilis are available within a day or two.
  • Blood tests for hepatitis may take four to five days.
  • A herpes culture will take three days of time in the lab before results can be reported.

Day of the Week

  • A large commercial lab may run tests seven days a week, while a hospital-based lab or local lab may close on weekends for all but emergency cases.
  • If results are sent to your health care provider's office on Saturday or Sunday, and they're closed, they may not be able to advise you of the result until they open again.

At our local family planning center, syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea results come in six days a week, are transmitted electronically to the office, and can be posted to the patient portal for direct patient viewing as soon as they're reviewed. Lab results are reviewed seven days a week. In summary, these are usually available within two days of the test taken. Hepatitis tests generally take three days to arrive, and herpes cultures come back about four days after the test. HIV results are available to the patient within 25 minutes of taking the test.
Usually about 1-2 weeks. Some times no news is good news but you may want to phone you're doctor and ask if or when they will have your results for you.
Depending on the test, you should have results within 1 to 2 days.
One to two weeks generally depending on what you're being tested for, and also if there is a holiday, that can delay results as well. Generally speaking if you are waiting on results, know that if the results come back positive the clinic or doctor will contact you to perform more tests and or council you and begin a regimen plan for eliminating or helping you live longer with what ever disease you may have contracted. Also if the results are negative the clinic or doctor will mail you your result with info on preventative methods to keep from contracting STD's.

There are several different kinds of urine analysis test (UAs). But depending if the test is being conducted in house, or sent out will determine the turn-around time.

If it is for the detection of drugs, these tests typically provide a result right away within 10 seconds to a few minutes.

If it is for other health issues many UAs can be done in house within a few minutes, however if a test warrants a closer look most likely it will be sent to a lab for further analysis using specialized analysis. This could take a long as a few days in the queue to be tested by the lab and then depending on what they are testing for and whether they need to culture the sample will depend on how long until they get back to you.

Most of the time a lab should have results within a few days of receiving the sample.

The initial testing is usually done in office while you wait. The culture, which is normally sent out to the lab, has to run for three days.

Depending on the test and equipment available, it can take from 1 day to a maximum of 7 days. Ask your health care provider what's typical turnaround for their office and lab.
