Domestic violence is as old as humanity. Incidents of domestic violence appear in all the great classics - from The Bible to Homer's Odyssey.

It seems that to abuse the weak and the intimate comes to us naturally.

If you as the asker believe in scripture then you will remember that Cain killed his brother Able, which was some years before your or my time, a few thousand years in fact. No one can put a precise date when this happened.

Domestic violence has been going on ever since, whether physical or verbal, and I have no doubt will continue until people knock some sense into their own heads.

There is no excuse for domestic violence unless it is for the protection of life and property.

Abusive relationships and Domestic Violence has gone on in America forever. It's as old as humanity itself. Some people feel it's just natural, which is why it has happend so much, unfortunately.

Domestic violence has been a problem since the beginning of time. Indeed, it has been institutionalized by many cultures throughout history.

There are numerous difficulties in getting out of a violent situation, for example: secrecy fostered within the home, not recognizing that one is being abused, not knowing who to turn to, religious or cultural beliefs which invest power in only one partner in a marriage and which promote submission at all cost, threats from the abuser, and denial.

If you have witnessed or suspect abuse in a home, do not remain silent! Contact the authorities. If you believe you may be being abused, do everything to extract yourself from the situation as soon as possible. If there is a child in the home who is witnessing abuse, that too, is considered to be abusive to the child. These innocent victims must be rescued at all cost.

Actions and offenses which the law now describes as "domestic violence" is NOT a modern phenomenon, and is certainly NOT peculiar to the US. It has been around since mankind began living together in familial groups and tribes.
