yes There has been war in the area for many decades.
Afganistan has had many wars over the centuries. The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan on December 24th, 1979, and they withdrew ten years later. The Taliban, a fanatical offshoot of Islam supported by the US, siezed control of Afghanistan which then became divided by civil war. In this war the US supported the Northern Alliance (known in Afghanistan as the United Front) in their war against the Taliban, and they liberated a sizable portion of the northern part of the country. After eleven years of fighting the Taliban covertly, the US committed air and ground forces to Afghanistan in 2001, and the Taliban was officially deposed, but fighting in Afghanistan continues.

Judging by history all wars do come to an end but some take much longer than others. The Afghanistan War has now become the U.S longest war in its history. Obama says that they will be completely out by 2014 but how many times have we heard that?
