As a green card holder you are allowed to make short trips abroad for less than 180 days at a stretch. In case you plan to stay outside US for more than a year you would require to apply for a reentry permit which is valid for 2 years with which you can enter US.

You should be out no more than 6 months and definitely no more than a year, unless you have already applied for a 2 year travel document.
