The predominate language is Spanish; however, there are significant communities of Mískito and Nicaraguan Mískito Coast Creole English speakers near the Caribbean Coast. Furthermore, a multitude of other indigenous languages are spoken in the Caribbean interior and there is a sizeable number of Nicaraguan Sign Language users.

The 1 official and national language of Nicaragua is Spanish.

Many of Nicaragua's citizens speak English as well. This is because English is taught in the schools in Nicaragua and also because many Nicaraguans have family in the U.S. that they often visit (especially in Miami, Florida, in Los Angeles, California, and in New York City).

There are also coastal areas of Nicaragua such as Bluefields and the very popular Corn Islands where people of Jamaican origin reside. They make up about 20% of the population and their language is English but many speak Spanish as well.

A small percentage of Nicaraguans are of pure Indigenous origin and these Indigenous peoples speak their native language similar to how the Cherokee tribe of Indians in the U.S. speak their Iroquoian language. The Indigenous peoples make up for less than 5% of the Nicaraguan population and they often live in reservations protected by the government just like the Indian tribes in the U.S.

Here is a complete list of the 10 recognized languages of Nicaragua (including extinct languages):

1. Garífuna
2. Matagalpa (extinct)
3. Mískito
4. Monimbo (extinct)
5. Nicaragua Creole English
6. Nicaraguan Sign Language
7. Rama
8. Spanish
9. Subtiaba (extinct)
10. Sumo-Mayangna
