Are there a lot of gay people in the world?

Overall, about 95-98 percent of the people in the world are not primarily or exclusively homosexually oriented. However, probably about 80 percent of us humans are bisexual, at least in the sense that we are capable of sex with either men or women (even if we don't actually do it).

Estimates vary greatly. It appears to be common knowledge (not to be confused with common sense or truth) that about one-in-ten people are gay (10% of the global population). Working on that basis, with an estimated world population of 7,074,819,990 (~7 billion; estimate January 2012) about 707,481,999 people (707 million) are gay.

If, as has been suggested, as much as one quarter of the world's population are gay (25%), that's around 1,750,000,000 (1.75 billion) people.

If we assume as few as one-in-twenty (5%), that's 350 million people worldwide, or about 40 million more than the population of the USA.

If it's as low as one-in-a-hundred (1%), that is 70,748,199- still more that the entire population of the UK (at about 70 Million).

In reality, it's very difficult to know. It's always going to be a guess based on asking populations questions about their lives, and trusting that they always tell the truth every time. Perhaps we can safely say that a good many more of the world have "experimented" but not continued, or that thanks to the persistence of several inhuman regimes, a great many also live in fear for their lives should their sexuality be exposed. It's not so easy for those living in more liberal societies either- ultimately, true numbers cannot realistically be known.
