I've no idea which is correct, but I checked the site Avert.org - huge site dedicated to AIDS, with all sorts of info and all sorts of stats, and they have it at 40 a day. The site is http://www.avert.org/aids-statistics.htm - they claim to be the world's most popular AIDS site, n have stories, info on history and science, stats on everything you can imagine, question and help page, etc: basically anything you can think of related to AIDS info and stats, and they are a charity n take donations to help AIDS patients evidently. The following is copied/pasted from them:
"Since 2000 the annual numbers of AIDS diagnoses have been relatively constant, with an estimated 37,041 in 2006. In total, an estimated 1,051,875 people have been diagnosed with AIDS in America.
The Death Rate among people with AIDS has also remained relatively stable in recent years; there were an estimated 14,561 deaths in 2007. Since the beginning of the epidemic, an estimated 583,298 people with AIDS have died in the USA."
