Approximately 650,000 soldiers died fighting in the Civil War. About one-third died in battle and two-thirds died from diseases that plagued the army camps.

In addition, tens of thousands of Civil War soldiers were never accounted for. The actual number of dead is sometimes estimated to be much higher.

One reason that we don't know exact numbers for the southern army is that the Army of Northern Virginia lost its war diary in the final days of the war during a Union raid. A tremendous amount of historical information was lost that day.
