It depends on which elections you are asking about, since Mr. Obama has been in a number of elections since he first ran for office in Chicago, Illinois in 1996. But I assume you are interested in recent history, such as presidential elections. How Mr. Obama got votes was the way any good politician does; he persuaded voters and donors that he was a candidate who could best lead the country. You need to persuade a large number of voters, since they will cast the ballots; they need to be people from all ages, and all demographic groups (African-American, Asian, Latino, single women, gay people, youth, etc.). Mr. Obama was able to persuade them that he had their interest at heart and would try to make policy that helped them.

But you also need to persuade donors, since they give the large amounts of money needed in a modern political campaign, to purchase advertising, do research on the issues, arrange events, etc. Barack Obama is by all accounts a skillful politician. So, he was able to get support from major donors who helped him to get his message out to the public. And as his vote totals show, he was also able to get large numbers of people to cast their ballots for him. In 2008, he received 69,498,516 votes. And in 2012, he received 65,907,213 votes.
