Around the 4-5 month mark, an ultrasound can show you the baby and an ultrasound technician can tell by looking at the genital area whether your baby is a boy or a girl. Some places have rules against telling the patients what sex their baby is, and some places have no problems about telling you.
Just in case you go to one where they won't tell you, I'll give you a hint so you can look and tell for yourself. Three lines on the baby's crotch indicate a female, those lines are the labia forming, and if it looks kind of like a turtle, then it's a boy and what you see are the testicles forming.
The sex of your baby is set by the sperm, whether it's carrying the X (female) or Y (male) chromosome, and DNA testing can determine gender from day one. I found out my babies were female when they were just 5-day-old embryos the size of a pinhead. But that's a different situation altogether! :)
