Many people (New Yorkers come to mind) have fully functional recording studios (capable of recording vocals and acoustic instruments, not just tracks made purely digitally) contained in the closet of an apartment. I've recorded full demos on a hotel bed with a laptop. True, this is the extreme on the bare-bones end.
