It depends on the type of "sweets" you're eating. Read the labels. Some ingredients don't say, "sugar." They usually say: glucose, fructose, etc.

L eats sweets because he doesn't sleep much therefore the sweets keep him awake. Reason why you see him drinking coffee/tea quite a bit. Plus, the sweets also help him concentrate when he's working on a case. Not to mention, he doesn't care how much sugar he eats because as he said himself - he burns the sugar off with his brain when he's thinking really hard.
