In general, you should see your veterinarian to get a prescription for tetracycline that is specific to your dog and the infection being treated. Doseage is based upon the dog's weight, the dog's health status (particularly liver and kidney function parameters), the type and location of the infection being treated and the formulation of the tetracycline.
If you're wrong on dosage, duration, or appropriateness, you can make the situation worse by making the bacterial infection more antibiotic resistant -- now you're going to REALLY have Vet bill -- or possibly loose your pet.
Tetracycline should be given to your dog on your Veterinarian's orders only. Tetracycline is not a broad spectrum antibiotic & it can be very toxic if too old. Take your dog in to be checked out by your Veterinarian if ill. Don't self medicate at home, that can be very dangerous for your dog.
You don't. You take them to the Vet. It may be the wrong drug so you're making it worse by making it more antibiotic resistant. And, a combination of drugs may be much more effective. See your Vet ASAP.
2nd Answer:
Tetracycline is the drug of choice but it should be given IV by a Veterinarian only. The stomach needs to rest and stop vomiting so that is why the tetracycline should be given via IV & not orally. Dogs become very ill with salmon poisoning and dehydrate fast. They normally run a very high temperature too along with diarrhea. They need to be treated with fluids also. Don't try to treat your dog at home as they can die very fast from this. Take your dog to your Veterinarian.
2nd answer is spot on. Rather than quibble about "drug of choice" (Vets will vary) and owners do also in their ability to recognize what's happening. Our consensus take away here is, this serious and best handled by a Vet, quickly. In this instance, a combination of antibiotics and fluids. Don't wait, go NOW.
