Hmmmm..

I would hope they serve 2 years and 6 months.

Unfortunately this is to often not the case.

I suppose if the case at hands was something of an accident, then with splendid behaviour you might be able to apply for early release after only 1 year.

Usually, a two year sentence means that you are in prison for... two years!

ANSWER

This varies. In the federal system a person sentenced to two years will do very close to all two years. In most State systems such as Missouri, a person sentenced to two years that has no prior convictions is eligible for parole release as soon as they get to prison. Most will do less than 6 months.

This cannot be answered in a general manner - too much is unknown and is dependent on the type of offense, the defendants past record (if any) - etc - etc. The worse the crime and/or the worst the defendants past record, the more time they will likely be sentenced to.
