I don't know about the rest of the country, but the N.Y. area and Long Island gas was in the neighborhood of 15 to 20 cents a gallon! There were "gifts" that some gas stations gave out, glasses and such. In 1965 we had a black out and I had to go to Wards Island to get gasoline from a spare car I had there, I then proceeded to Manhattan and met my wife in a bar! She was with her co-workers and we had a big party by candel light! My job , that night was to deliver all the people home! Gasoline , that night was worth it's weight in gold! NOTE: To this day I won't let my gas gauge go below 1/2 !
