In 1951, it cost just 10 cents to ride the New York City subway. At the time, tokens had not been introduced yet. Instead, you bought a ticket, and a ticket chopper manned by a guard took your ticket.

In 1953, tokens were introduced, and the fare rose from 10 to 15 cents.

Five cents. The fare was 5 cents from the time the subway system opened in 1904 until 1948, when it doubled to 10 cents.

Adjusted for inflation, the 5-cent fare would be equal to $1.22 in 2008 dollars. In 1948, the new 10-cent fare would be equal to 89 cents in 2008 dollars.

In 1953, the fare again increased to 15 cents, or $1.21 in 2008 dollars.
