What subway do you take from 31st Street to Grand Central Terminal?

Well, it depends on whether you're starting out from East 31st Street or West 31st Street. But either way, if you don't have luggage to carry, you should seriously consider just walking, instead of taking the subway, especially if you're starting out from the East Side. The walk is only 0.5 to 1.5 miles. From East 31st, it's about half a mile to a mile, and from West 31st, it's about a mile to a mile and a half.

Grand Central Station is at East 42nd between Park and Lexington. In New York City, 17 to 20 street blocks (north/south blocks) equals a mile, and 5 to 10 avenue blocks (east/west blocks) equals a mile. So, from 31st to 42nd Street is half a mile. The distance east or west could be anywhere from 0 to 1 miles.

If you really want to take the subway, here are your options:

1) West Side: take the Uptown 1-2-3 (the red line) or the Uptown A-C-E (the blue line), one stop, from Penn Station (34th Street & 7th Avenue on the 1-2-3, and 34th and 8th Avenue on the A-C-E) to 42nd Street (Times Square). At the Times Square Station, transfer to the S shuttle train (color code grey) east across 42nd Street, from Times Square (West 42nd) to Grand Central (East 42nd).

2) Center of Manhattan: take the Uptown N or Q (of the N-R-Q-W, the yellow line), one stop, from Herald Square (34th & Broadway) to Times Square. Again, transfer at Times Square for the S shuttle train east across 42nd to Grand Central.

3) East Side: take the Uptown 4-5-6 (the dark green line) one stop, from 33rd Street to Grand Central.

Is there a train from John F. Kennedy to Harlem?

Yes, you can take the A train to Harlem. Actually, the A train will take you to Morningside Heights, which is the neighborhood west of Harlem, but it's only one block east from there to Harlem.

First, you take the shuttle, called the AirTrain, from inside the JFK terminals to the Howard Beach Station of the A train (of the A-C-E, the blue line). Then take the Manhattan-bound A train to 125th Street. The station is at 125th Street and Amsterdam, and from there it's just one avenue block east to the western end of Harlem: Amsterdam Avenue ---> Morningside Avenue ---> St. Nicolas Avenue. Morningside Avenue forms the western border of Harlem.

You could also take the A train to 34th Street-Penn Station, then transfer to the Uptown 2 or 3 trains (of the 1-2-3, the red line) to 125th Street, at 125th Street and Lenox Avenue/Malcolm X Boulevard (Lenox Avenue becomes Malcolm X Boulevard at 125th Street).

The 125th Street stop on the 2 and 3 is several avenue blocks east of the 125th Street stop on the A. It drops you off in the middle of Harlem.

Is Penn Station close to Grand Central Station?

Yes, Penn Station is close to Grand Central Station. They are less than a mile apart.

But, if you are asking because you are planning on walking or taking a bus or taxi from one to the other...don't. You can just take the subway: take the Uptown 1-2-3 (the red line) one stop, from 34th Street-Penn Station to Times Square. Then transfer at Times Square to the S shuttle train (color code grey) east across 42nd Street, from Times Square (West 42nd) to Grand Central (East 42nd).

You can also take the Uptown A-C-E from Penn Station to Times Square, but this will require you to walk through a long, hot, smelly underground tunnel. Since the Times Square Station is at 7th Avenue, while the A-C-E line runs up and down 8th Avenue, the A-C-E does not stop at Times Square. It stops at 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal. The underground tunnel connects the Times Square Station to the A-C-E line, so you can transfer without exiting the subway system.

So, it is preferable to take the 1-2-3 from Penn Station to Times Square, so you won't have to walk through the tunnel. But if you can't find the 1-2-3 or something (or if the A-C-E just happens to be right there when you get off your train) you CAN take it to Times Square.

Can you pick up the D train at Penn Station?

No, the D train (of the B-D-F-M, the orange line) does not stop at Penn Station. But the A-C-E line does, and you can transfer from the A-C-E to the D train at two points in Manhattan:

Take the Uptown A or C trains (not the E) from 34th Street-Penn Station to 59th Street-Columbus Circle, and transfer at 59th Street-Columbus Circle to the D.

Take the Downtown A-C-E from 34th Street-Penn Station to West 4th Street, and transfer at West 4th Street to the D.

How do you get to 225 Cadman Plaza Brooklyn NY 11201 on the subway?

There is a 225 Cadman Plaza East and a 225 Cadman Plaza West. If you're going to US District Court East, then it's Cadman Plaza East, but just in case, I will give walking directions to both.

Which subway route to take depends on where you're coming from. You can take the F (of the B-D-F-M, the orange line) to York Street, the A or C (of the A-C-E, the blue line) to High Street, the 2 or 3 (of the 1-2-3, the red line) to Clark Street, the N or R (of the N-R-Q, the yellow line) to Court Street, or the 4 or 5 (of the 4-5-6, the dark green line) to Borough Hall.

I have listed the stations in descending order. Each one is further south than the last (i.e., the F to York Street is the furthest north, then the A or C to High Street-Brooklyn Bridge, then the 2 or 3 to Clark Street, etc.)

The F

The F to York Street will drop you off on Jay Street, near the corner of Jay and Sands Streets, on the west side of the Manhattan Bridge.

Walk north on Jay Street to Prospect Street, turn left, and walk west on Prospect Street to Cadman Plaza East or Cadman Plaza West, then turn left and walk south on Cadman Plaza East or West to 225. The address 225 Cadman Plaza West is a lot further north than 225 Cadman Plaza East.

The A or C

The A or C to High Street will drop you off at Cadman Plaza East, which forms the eastern border of Brooklyn War Memorial Park. To get to 225 Cadman Plaza West, walk west to Cadman Plaza West, and north to 225 (which should be at or near the intersection of Cadman Plaza West and Middagh Street).

To get to 225 Cadman Plaza East, walk south on Cadman Plaza East to 225.

The 2 or 3

The 2 or 3 to Clark Street will drop you off at the corner of Clark and Henry Streets. Walk two blocks east on Clark Street to Cadman Plaza West. Then either walk north on Cadman Plaza West to 225, or walk straight east through the park to Cadman Plaza East. The address 225 Cadman Plaza East is pretty much exactly where Clark Street is.

The N or R

The N or R to Court Street will drop you off at the corner of Clinton and Montague Streets. Walk half a block east on Montague Street to Cadman Plaza West, and then either walk north on Cadman Plaza West to 225, or walk north on Cadman Plaza West to Clark Street, then turn right at Clark Street and walk straight across the park to 225 Cadman Plaza East.

Note: the N train only stops at Court Street at night (11 PM to 5:30 AM) when the R isn't running. You CANNOT take the N unless you're traveling between 11 PM and 5:30 AM.

The 4 or 5

The 4 or 5 to Borough Hall will drop you off on Joralemon Street, between Court and Adams Streets. Walk half a block west to Court Street, turn right, and walk north on Court Street. Court Street becomes Cadman Plaza West just a block or two north of Joralemon Street. Either walk up Cadman Plaza West to 225, or, turn right at Clark Street and walk straight east across the park to 225 Cadman Plaza East.

What train will take you to Rector Street?

The 1 train (of the 1-2-3, the red line) will take you to Rector Street.

You can also take the 4 or 5 trains (of the 4-5-6, the dark green line) to Wall Street. You will exit the subway at the intersection of Wall Street and Broadway. Walk south one block on Broadway, and turn right onto Rector Street.

If you walk one block and find yourself at the intersection of Broadway and Pine Street, then you have walked north instead of south. Turn around and walk back south to Rector.

You can also take the J-Z (the brown line) to Broad Street. When you exit the subway, walk north one block to the intersection of Wall Street and Nassau Street (Broad Street becomes Nassau Street when it intersects with Wall Street).

Make a left onto Wall Street, and walk one block west to the intersection of Wall Street and Broadway (where the Wall Street Station of the 4 and 5 trains is).

Make another left turn, and walk one block south on Broadway to Rector Street, then turn right onto Rector.

Which subway do you take from Port Authority to SoHo?

The simplest way would be to take the C or Etrains (of the A-C-E, the blue line) from 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal to Spring Street (at 6th Avenue). SoHo runs south/north from Canal Street to Houston Street, and west/east from Sullivan Street through Crosby Street. Sullivan Street is the next block east after 6th Avenue. So the Spring Street Station on the C and E is 1 block west of the western end of SoHo.

You could also take the N or R (of the N-R-Q-W, the yellow line) to Prince Street (at Broadway). This station is smack in the middle of SoHo.

You can get the N or R at the Times Square Station, at 42nd Street and 7th Avenue, 1 block east of the Port Authority Bus Terminal (42nd Street and 8th Avenue). You can exit the Port Authority and walk at street level to the Times Square Station.

Or, you can get on the subway at the 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal Station, and walk through the underground tunnel to the 42nd Street-Times Square Station. The two stations are connected by a tunnel so you can transfer between them without exiting the subway system.
