There are a lot of variables that will affect the answer to your question. For example, what kind of grass? How high do you mow? How often do you mow? What kind of soil? How much natural rainfall? How much wind? How hot is it? What is the humidity? What quality water? How often do you fertilize? What kind of irrigation? Water pressure? Your best bet might be to experiment. For example, I water for 5 minutes every other day, and my lawn looks great. I will probably increase the time a little if the lawn looks dry as we get more into summer, and reduce it in the fall. Go by how your lawn looks. If you water too much, you are wasting water and you will promote fungal diseases. If it looks too dry, then increase it a little.

A healthy lawn needs at least an inch of water per week.

  • Deep and infrequent is the best way to water the lawn, this is accomplised by watering only once or twice a week (1/2 inch twice a week or 1 inch once a week).
  • Early Morning to afternoon is the best time to water, this allows the lawn to dry out before evening
  • Evening watering is not recommended due to the potential of fungus development. However, in the Southwest you can water in the evening because of the low humidity and high daytime temperatures.

Sandy Soils need watered in 1/2 inch increments.

Clay soils need to be watered slowly, sprinklers need to apply water no faster than the ground can absorb it, if this is impossible then turn off the water until the water has been absorbed, then repeat until full amount as been applied

During drought it is better to restrict watering to the lawn them to provide less water. The small amount of water might prevent the desirable grasses from going into dormancy.

How much water does the average lawn need in one day?

Watering once a day, even for short periods of time is not the best for your lawn. It is best to water deep and infrequently. Most lawns require 1 inch of water per week (even during the summer) so the best practice for watering the lawn would be to water twice a week, giving the lawn 1/2 an inch of water at one time.
