Low functioning thyroid (hypothyroidism) can cause weight gain by slowing down the body's metabolism. It also causes other symptoms such as sensitivity to cold (getting cold easily), dry/brittle hair, constipation, and heavy periods. This condition can only be diagnosed with a blood test looking at levels of thyroid hormones. If one's thyroid is low, they can take thyroid supplementing hormones, which will cause them to lose weight. However, it is important not to take any more medication than is necessary to regulate the hormone, because it can be dangerous (for example, causing an irregular heart beat). If the problem with the thyroid is overfunctioning (hyperthyroidism), symptoms are weight loss, racing heart, sweating, and anxiety.

You don't necessarily gain any specific amount of weight from having a thyroid dysfunction. I have an under active thyroid and I have always struggled with my weight badly since I can remember, I think my weight is probably around the 200lb mark at the moment and I'm a 5ft7in tall girl, but I don't eat loads of rubbish or anything like that. I go at it like mad in the gym too! I take 100mg of levothyroxine every day as prescribed by my doctor but it doesn't help my weight really, just helps balace my TSH levels.

however my best friend also has an under active thyroid but she's got a tiny figure, she's about 80lb. She eats crap and doesn't even exercise! So I think some people are just lucky.

Sad to say I am not one of the lucky ones!

If you do have a thyroid problem and you are over weight with it the best thing to do is just be really good with your eating habits and start getting some exercise. That's what I'm doing. Having an under active thyroid does make losing weight much more difficult so it means you have to work twice as hard with the exercise as someone without a thyroid problem would. I know its a pain in the bum but if you persevere as hard as you can when you do eventually start seeing results and feeling the benefits it will be the motivation you need to keep going! :)

If you are desperately having problems with your weight and can't shift it no matter how hard you try I think there is some kind of pill you can get from your doctor to help boost your weight loss with exercise but I guess it would be up to your doctor whether he/she will prescribe it for you. I've never taken it.

Do diet pills affect hypothyroid treatments?

One may take any medication needed on the Protocol, however it is likely, particularly with thyroid medication, that the weight reduction rate will not be as rapid as otherwise. This should not be a deterrent, though, as it will still be superior to any other weight loss regimen. It will be important to monitor one's thyroid levels, preferably for free T3, to determine when it is necessary to adjust the medication as it is likely to require less as the Protocol seems to aid in repairing the hypothalamus which, in turn, affects thyroid hormone levels. This is also true for diabetics using insulin on the Protocol as they often need far less insulin as their weight is released and their diet is improved.
