Haiti, once, the richest colony in the world that provided the globe with its sugar and coffee, became poor for many reasons. The Haitian Revolution shocked the world; the first successful slave rebellion to govern a country. The rest of the world did not take too kindly to this and saw Haiti as a potential threat, especially concerning the United States whom continued to utilize slavery and were fearful of a slave revolt of their own. Haiti was embargoed by the United States who collaborated with the very Latin American nations Haiti helped revolutionize when Haiti's first President Alexandre Petion armed revolutionary leader Simon Bolivar and funded the Pan-Colombian war of independence as Haiti saw any European existing colonization in the hemisphere to be a perpetual threat to their new-found existence. It also did not help that France threatened to invade Haiti in 1825 with warships and reimpose slavery (even though it was made illegal in France) unless Haiti paid 150 million francs ($21 billion today and was still imposed right up until Haiti's earthquake) and trade under a significant discount. There was also always tensions within two of Haiti's social classes consisting of the mulattos (mixed race) and blacks that persisted throughout colonial times inducing governments to overthrow one another in a coup d'etats that consisted of dictators, making matters worse. Recently, the country is stabilizing and attempting to move forward in hopes to become somewhat relevant again, how it used to be in the early 20th century when tourism was booming.
