The external, limiting lipid bilayer membrane of cells. A thin membrane around the cytoplasm of a cell. It controls passage of substances in and out of the cell. The plasma membrane allows a steady supply of nutrients to come into the cell also known as homeostasis. The plasma membrane contains proteins that span through the membrane and allow for the passage of proteins. The plasma membrane is located on the outside of animal cells or beneath the cell wall on plant cells.

It is called the lipid bilayer because it is composed of two layers of fat cells organized in two sheets.
