You only need one ethernet connection on the laptop for DSL.
If you need to connect to other computers on an ethernet network then you can buy a 4 or 8 port Wireless/Lan router. Plug the Broadband box into the router, laptop into the router. And if you need more connections then you can buy a 4, 8 or 16 port ethernet switch and plug the router into that and then plug the other computers into the switch and there you go.

I have a laptop that is about the same age as the one you have(you should put the make/model/specs next time instead of saying its small and eight years old) and it works just fine with broadband. You will need a ethernet port, and usually you will need something about 200Mhz processor, 128Mb of ram(not hard drive space), and windows 98 or better( An Apple computer or a computer with Linux on it with an ethernet port will work too), and like about 50Mb to 100Mb of hard drive space.
