While King L. Tarquinius Superbus was away on a campaign his son raped the virtuous Lucretia which caused relatives of the king to start a revolt against the king and his son. When the king returned from his campaign he found himself shut out of the city. This is the point of the fall of the monarchy in Rome and the foundation of the republic.

Tarquinius Superbus was overthrown in a rebellion. According to the Roman tradition, this followed the suicide of Lucretia, a noblewoman who killed herself because she was raped by the son of the king. Lucius Junius Brutus, the head of the king's personal bodyguard, was entitled to summon the comitia curiata, an assembly of Romans citizens. He reminded them of Taquinius Superbus tyranny and abuses of power, told the story of Lucretia and called for the deposition of the king and the exile of the royal family . He also proposed the establishment of a republic and the replacement of the king by two annually elected consuls. The people agreed. Brutus also made them swear that they would never allow anyone to try to become a king. On hearing about these events, Taquinius Superbus, who was besieging the city of Ardea, returned to Rome, but found the city gates closed and left.
