So many slaves died on the journey to America due to poor conditions. The cargo ships were packed with 300 to 450 African slaves each and the journey usually took about 100 days. The slaves were chained together in the hold with no space for sanitary needs, let alone standing room. There was an average 10 percent death rate, however if the journey was dealyed due to storms or adverse winds, that mortalisty rate rose. In addition to the poor conditions, the slaves were not accumstomed to the diseases of the Europeans; for example, their bodies were not accustomed to smallpox and typhus.

The middle passage was stage two of slave relocation as I call it. It was called the middle passage because it was the second of three stages and also because it was when slaves sailed from West Africa to now known as America. It was also the time when the slaves were squished together and were on the revolting boat. They tell you this in school but the do not give a more specific answer.

What was so bad about the middle passage?

Most of the African captives died during the middle passage because the passage could take up to several weeks to complete and there was a lack of food and exercise. And where the slaves would be staying was very unhygienic and unsuitable for someone to stay especially a human being.

Why were slaves traded in the middle passage?

The middle passage was a terrible experiance for the slaves as they were all chained up lying on wooden pannels which would often have more slaves above them, they we're fed disgusting nasty food and were abused physically and mentaly. They were often exercised and given fresh air once or twice a day and were made to dance etc. They were treated like this for many many weeks, even months. So thats why:) Writen by a 13yr old girl from scotland;D
