That answer below is true - but medications for HIV are better than ever before and there are more coming down the pipeline. If a HIV poz person eats healthy, doesn't smoke and exercises regularly, and adheres to their medication then they can live for a very very long time. Not only have I been living with HIV for 4 years now I also know of people who have lived with the virus for 18+ years! The medication is excellent compared to what it once was in the 80's and early 90's. HIV/AIDS is no longer a death sentence. It is now considered more of a chronic condition. But medication must be taken all the time with no doses being missed. Also, it is my personal belief and I'm sure there are many doctors who would agree with me...if you are sexually active at any age and if you engage in unprotected sex or have in the past regardless of being married or not, you should get tested once per year for HIV. 1/3 of people with the virus don't know they have it and unknowingly infect others. This virus does not discriminate, it has no boundaries. I come from a wealthy family and I'm Caucasian. However, there is a community out there for HIV poz people where they can turn to for support. Poz.com or Thebody.com are great resources for people wanted to educate themselves on this disease. Get tested, have no fear because knowledge is power. It means that if you don't have it (AIDS) yet, you will soon (usually 6 months to a year). AIDS is the symptoms ... HIV is the (virus) cause.

AIDS isn't soemthing that is caught, it's something that can develop over time. Only once you contract an HIV related illness (it ranges from pneumonia to the common cold) and your t-cell count reaches below one hundred cells per liter of blood are you considered to have AIDS.

No, not always. A person can be positive for HIV, but not for AIDS. Some people are positive for HIV, but they don't develop the actual AIDS disease - because HIV is just a virus that causes AIDS. Although it is always safe to get examined at the doctor if you have any symptoms of HIV.

Yes.

HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. Just because someone is HIV+ doesnt mean they have developed AIDS. However, if someone has an AIDS diagnosis, they are HIV+.

What is the bacterial and viral cause of HIV?

HIV stands for Human Immuno-deficiency Virus. It is probably a mutated monkey disease from Africa according to the latest theories. AIDS (Auto-Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is probably caused by contracting the HIV infection, but with appropriate early treatment HIV does not always cause the symptoms of AIDS. People with the HIV infection are always contagious - you can catch it from them unless you use proper precautions when you are exposed to their body fluids. You won't catch it by hugging or being in the same room with someone who has HIV, or AIDS. If you are having any kind of sex or intimate contact with someone with HIV or AIDS, talk to your doctor or clinic about how to be as safe as possible.
