Caffeine causes the Hypothalamus to produce additional stores of Dopamin and Norepinephrine, two of the brain's neurotransmitters. Because patients with ADD/ADHD have fewer neurotransmitters than the average person, this overload of Dopamine causes you to become very, very sleepy.

What will caffeine do to someone with ADHD?

Caffeine has not been approved to treat ADHD, nor has it been proven to have any dramatic effects on focus or attention. Caffeine is a very mild stimulant and it belongs to the same class of drugs (psychostimulants) that are commonly used to treat ADHD such as amphetamine or methylphenidate. There have been theories that many people with ADHD benefit more from caffeine and it may be an attempt to self-medicate (similar to the higher proportion of individuals with ADHD that smoke tobacco which contains nicotine); treating ADHD with caffeine is not recommended.

Are energy drinks harmful to teenagers with ADHD?

I'm not sure that energy drinks would be recommended to be highly consumed by anyone, let alone a young person. However, this has nothing to do with ADHD. There have been millions upon millions of dollars worth of research done in an attempt to find a link between food and ADHD, and absolutely no evidence to date has been found to suggest ADHD is impacted in any way (let alone caused) by foods. (this includes energy drinks). If you have a young person who consumes large quantities of highly caffinated drinks in order to try to have a normal level of ability to concentrate, you may want to consider medication (if they are not already on medication). Taking large amounts of caffeine could be considered to be like a form of self -medication, as it does increase ones ability to concentrate (a major problem for those with attention deficiency). This should not be necessary if one is being otherwise medicated. Caffine is of course a stimunlant, just as many other ADHD medications are stimulants. Good Luck.

How does ADD and drug addiction and or alcoholism relate?

From rumors that spread, ADD and ADHD have nothing to do with drug addiction or alcholism. If someone who has ADHD or ADD drinks a class of wine a night they are not considered an alcholic. ADD and ADHD persons some do take medications to help them becasue ADHD and ADD is all about low levels of dopamine. Therefore, your questions on how they all relate is that they do not. A person chooses to be an alcholic or have a drug addiction. If someone with ADD is alwasys looking to get drunk that is not becasue of their ADD that is more of a poor life choice.
