No, court cases were between each person involved. Each gave evidence, and the jury decided. Nor were there judges - just the juries. The parties made their case within a period of 3 hours each. They could say whatever they liked, but in a small community the juries would be aware of what had gone on, so the evidence tendered had to be reasonable or they would damage their own case. Juries were usually 500-strong and so represented a virtual opinion poll of the citizenship. Sentences were proposed by both sides, and the jury could select only one or the other, so each side made reasonable proposals in order to get the jury to support them.
