Voting in Nevada has traditionally run with Idaho, Utah and other conservative mountain states of the West on most political issues. However, the demographics have changed dramatically over the years due to extensive urbanization in the Las Vegas and Reno areas, and Nevada is now generally considered a "swing" state which can vote for more liberal candidates in the national elections. Nevada voted for Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama for President in recent decades. It is no longer meaningful to have a blanket label because it depends on the issue at hand. The US Senate currently has a Majority Leader from Nevada in Harry Reid. There are three moderate Democrats and two Republicans from Nevada in Congress, including former chair of the National Republican Committee John Ensign. The state legislature is strongly controlled by Democrat majorities. Governor Jim Gibbons is Republican. There is a perceived north-south divide in the state, with more conservative northern legislators competing against the growing southern majority on many issues. The more real political divide is urban versus rural, especially in competition for scarce water resources for local use or long-distance exports.
