Sanskrit, while being one of the oldest known languages (which has not been spoken for a couple thousand years), is not the oldest language. Vedic Sanskrit, the oldest form of the language, is generally believed to have descended fro Proto-Indo-European. There are two other parent lines of today's (and past) languages. These, with Proto-Indo-European, are Proto-Uralic (roots in the Ural Mountain region to Scandanavia) and Proto-Dravidian (southernmost region of India and a small region of modern day Pakistan).

Sanskrit is considered one of the oldest known languages but not the oldest. It is one of the earliest attested members of the Indo-European language family and has a rich literary history. Other contenders for the title of oldest language include Tamil, Sumerian, and Ancient Egyptian.
