Yes -I use it all the time.
I use it emails and for for synchronizing my contacts and calendar with my Sony Ericsson phone.
I have also synchronized it with a HTC smartphone (Windows mobile) in the past, but that used a piece of software that wasn't free.

All in all -I don't need to use Microsoft Outlook any more to sync with my phone.
Assuming you're talking about 'Mozilla Thunderbird' - It's an email program... just use it the same way you'd use any other email software.
Some good rated email clients are Mozilla Thunderbird, Opera, Windows Live Mail, and Pegasus Mail. A few more email clients are IncrediMail, Mulberry, and Foxmail.
