B.Ed. is a Bachelor of Education. Further studies can be done as a B.A. or a B.Sc. Some universities (though few from what I understand) offer a B.Sc.Ed. which is a combined Bachelor of Science and Education degree.
It does depend on the state/province that does the certification. Some states/provinces require a B.Sc., or a B.A., at a minimum before allowing entry into a B.Ed. program.
It depends on the specific school and department preferred approach to the field. The difference is indicated below.
The Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) has a broader scope, with a strong emphasis on the humanities, theoretical and general knowledge in a recognized discipline, interdisciplinary field, or of a professional study.
The Bachelor of Science degree (BS) is more of a focused approach with a science base to include a balance of liberal arts, technological knowledge, math and computer oriented skills, and practical skills needed for a particular discipline within the field.
The degree for elementary education can either be a BA, meaning bachelor of the arts, or a BS degree, meaning bachelor of science.
It can be either, depending on your concentration of studies. And I have a specific Bachelors in Music Education. There are many others, too. The operative word is EDUCATION.
