I sometimes use Borax in my laundry. Borate is essentially the same stuff. Borax is something that, like copper and some other elements, the dose really does make the poison, both in plants and in animals. In small doses it an essential nutrient, essential to good health. Dump a line of laundry borax on a lawn and it ill kill the grass in that line, and then a short distance away, where the dose is right, it will improve the growth rather than injure it. This makes it safe and effective for insect control and fire control, as long as it's in a place where minor leaching will be diluted enough to not harm non-target species. The same cannot be said of arsenate.

What is voltage grade of cable?

Voltage Grade of cables specifies the safe voltages which the insulation of the cable can withstand.

Why and how does insulation depend on voltage?

Where you find wire insulation with ratings of 300 volts, 600 volts and 1000 volts, these are the highest allowable voltages that can be applied. A wire that is rated for 300 volts is good for 120 volts, 240 volts and 277 volts. At test research facilities, insulation on a wire is tested to destruction. The label that is given to wire's insulation, as a result of the tests, is the highest safest voltages that can be applied to that particular wire. So when you see a wire that has a label stating that it is rated for 300 volts it means that any voltage under and up to 300 volts is safe to apply.

Do not enter high voltage?

Substations may contain uninsulated high-voltage lines, busbars, and other equipment. Although this live equipment is mounted at a safe distance from trained personnel, those unaware of the hazards may approach the live equipment without realising that the voltages are high enough to break down the insulation of the air if they should approach within the safe distance limits, with lethal results.

Advantages and disadvantages of underground and overhead cables?

Overhead transmission lines are less expensive, in most cases, significantly less expensive, than underground cables. Underground transmission cables require insulation, cooling systems, and -the most expensive feature- excavation!

Is spray foam insulation safe?

The current products state once your foam is hardened they do not harm the ozone and emit toxic gases into your home. The product websites neglect to mention that the act of spray foaming itself is quite dangerous to your health. The dangerous ingredient in all polyurethane spray foams is isocyante.

Environmentally Friendly Attic Insulation?

Every home must use insulation of some type, especially when an attic is involved. Attics are known for losing heat quickly, especially when the temperature is below freezing. Attic insulation comes in various forms, but the most popular is fiberglass, although better and more technological types of insulation have recently become available for home use as well. The newer insulation is also more environmentally friendly as well, although they do cost a bit more to employ but the cost savings can be dramatic.Recycled Cellulose Attic InsulationCellulose is a renewable resource and is one of the most environmentally friendly attic insulators available worldwide., Not only does it reduce heating and cooling costs, but it is also easy to sue and recycle as well. Additionally, using post consumer cellulose fill is even more environmentally friendly because it saves the manufacturers from needing to produce more, thus lowering the overall carbon footprint of the insulation as a whole. Using recycled cellulose means using materials from landfills and this will reduce the amount of chemicals released into the air from manufacturing other paper products. Waste paper is one of the biggest sources of cellulose so using it as an insulator for an attic is logical. All that is needed is enough waste paper or other loose recycled cellulose that has been treated with an environmentally friendly bug repellant and flame retardant spray to fill the needed square footage of the attic floor, for example. This works especially well if the attic is not used. Simply covering the attic flooring with the cellulose will be enough to keep the heat and cool air downstairs where it belongs.Downfall to CelluloseOne thing to keep in mind, though if cellulose s in fact used as an attic insulator is that if it rains and the attic leaks, the insulator may rot and mold. Because cellulose is a natural fiber, it can soak up water as any other paper would. This means that any leaks in the attic should be sealed before applying the attic insulation otherwise the project could turn messy and hazardous as well.Overall, recycled cellulose is a great choice for attic insulation projects. It is relatively cheap since a person can simply cut up their old newspapers and treat it with the environmentally safe treatments, It is also very easy to apply because simply spreading around enough to cover the floor up to a few inches thick is enough to keep costs down while saving the Earth.

I have a hole in the wall where the stovepipe goes through. Is it safe to put insulation around the pipe to fill in the hole?

You have to ensure that the insulation you are using is flame proof and heat resistent, special insulation specifically for this purpose should be available at the hardware store.

Can you use ground up foam packing foam as insulation?

It's not safe for residential use because it is quite flammable. Construction grade styrofoam insulation is treated with a flame retardant.
