His father was a Brahmin and a freedom fighter. He was jailed for his actions and was persecuted by Brahmin-haters in prison. He was protected by his friend Yakob Hassan from those attacks and in gratitude he included the name "hasan" into all of his children's names.
Kamal Hassan's original name was actually Kamalhasan, only one name. When he started in movies he changed it to Kamal Hasan. Due to misspelling and assumptions it became "Haasan".
He did not correct anyone because he said it should not matter what his religion is, people should judge him for his merits and not if he shares their religious beliefs.
