Olive oil is made by crushing/pressing the oils out of picked olives. Extra virgin olive oil is the result of the first pressing while regular olive oil is made from later pressings.

What color olive green?

No, a green olive is not a vegetable. All olives are considered to be a fruit. The olives are made to be green during processing. Green olives can be eaten alone or in various recipes.

Is olive oil made only from greeen olives?

The best time to make olive oil is right after they ripen, when they are green. The methods are different depending on which grower you ask, but olive oil itself is made before the olives turn black.

What taste does olive have?

YES!!! The Kalamata olive has a MUCH stronger, saltier taste than your typical Spanish black olive. If you want something a little bit weaker in taste than the Kalamata go with a green olive, or stick with the black olives you find at the grocery store (they have the weakest taste). If you do want the best Kalamata or Greek Green Olives, I found that Martinis brand has the best taste, at the lowest price. And their olives are straight from Greece, and Kosher certified (incase that matters). You can find them on amazon.com or shop.martinisinc.com.

What is the difference between a green pepper and black pepper?

Olives grow on olive trees in Spain, Italy, Greece, and the US. The black (ripe) olives have a stronger, more pungent taste than green olives. The reason that we don't taste the bitterness of the black olives (when we buy them in a can) is because most of the oil and flavor is taken out, when marinated in water with a slight bit of vinegar and just a very small amount of salt. The green olives that we buy in the jar are marinated in water with a bit of vinegar and lots of brine salt, and often stuffed with pimentos. The brine salt and vinegar kills the bitterness of the olives; this is why in the US when you taste green or black olives , you usually can't taste the original authentic flavor. Another difference is the curing. Olives are cured in brine (salt and water). A green olive is picked early so it remains green after curing. A black olive stays on the tree longer and is black. It is black when cured, too.

Can olives be used for salads?

Olives can be used in salad, they are actually really good in it (preferably black or green). The green olives are the ones with the red pepper in the center of it. Although I've never heard of an olive salad (like a salad made up of olives). I haven't eaten or heard of it, but I'm sure you can make your own, with spices and other ingredients. It's not impossible after all. Maybe try to make your own dish, and post your recipe here on wiki for everyone to know! I bet it will be yummy!

How do you grow olives?

Well, the first step in making olive oil is to get the best and freshest olives. Black or green olives are usually used when making olive oil because they tend to be the most commonly grown and produce the best yield. When making olive oil, the olives should be extracted from the tree and removed of all debris including leaves, twigs, and waste that is present on the olive. Make sure that you DO NOT remove the pits of the olive when in the process of making olive oil. In fact, the pits are the part of the olive that gives the most oil. When the olives are ready to be juiced, most oil producers will use some form of a masher or mortar and pestle to grind the olives into a paste. When grinding, do not be tempted to put the olives in a blender or food processor because when ground quickly, the olive will give off a very bitter taste in its oil. When the paste is made, the oil will be visible and then can be extracted in some way, either through a filter or strainer.
