A war. A revolution is the complete internal restrucuring of a society. A war is a contest carried out by force of arms. Americans fought a war of independance, they didn't restructure society like the french would in a few years.
The American Revolution was not a complete revolution. The American's felt oppressed by British Imperial rule. A good way to describe this is "taxation without representation", the Americans were forced to pay taxes by the British in order to increase British revenue. Some of the taxes include the Stamp Act, the Sugar Act, the Currency Act and the Intolerable Acts, all of which were made American's angry with British rule. These were some of the long term and short term causes of the revolution, the American's wanted a new political system which would steer away from monarchies, rule of the few over the many and established churches. They feared oppressive governments and after the revolution was over, established a democratic system which would decrease the power of the government. Free trade and basic human freedoms were established. Despite there being a lot of political reform, there was not enough societal reform to label it a traditional revolution. The political power was still in the hands of the wealthy, white, Anglo-Saxon men. The equality that was talked about during the revolution did not apply to women and persons of color. Thus racism, sexism and slavery were abundant for centuries to come. Furthermore, the revolution reinfroced the class divisions within American society and thus made it no different from what was happening before the revolution. Finally, the Americans were fighting in order to separate from Britain and create their own political system, not change the British system. This shows that it was a War of Independence rather than only a revolutionary war. In the end it was both revolutionary and evolutionary. Some of the changes they fought for did occur, but it was also a war with a goal of separation. Revealing that overall the American Revolution was not truly a traditional revolution.
