All potato plants have flowers, but most modern varieties do not produce seeds. This is because they were bred to put their energy into the tuber, and have lost the ability to reproduce sexually. For most field potatoes, white or purple flowers appear at about 12 weeks after plants emerge, then the flowers fall off a few days later.

Some people do still propagate the older varieties from seed, and save the seeds to plant every year. While this lessens the chance of virus-infected potatoes, it is not feasible on a large scale.

Potato flower colours are red and brownish purple, blue and bluish purple. White flowers do exist. (the flesh colour of tubers may be yellow)
