They are infamous for killing sheep in the mountains of South Island, New Zealand. A bounty was placed on Kea in the 1880s because of this behavior. The population saw a sharp decline as a result of this, and now it is believed that fewer than 5,000 remain in the wild.

The kakapo, also called the owl parrot, is a nocturnal parrot of New Zealand. It is critically endangered, and extinct on the North Island.

Prior to European settlement, there were no native predators of the kakapo in New Zealand. They are particularly subject to predation by stoats and feral cats, both of which have been introduced. The current recovery programme involves relocation of the kakapo to protected islands. Since the implementation of the Kakapo Recovery Plan which was established in 1989, numbers have gradually increased, but the bird is still critically endangered. Currently, the numbers hover around just over 100 specimens remaining.

Yes. Not all species of kiwi are endangered, but the Brown kiwi (Apteryx mantelli) is endangered. There are believed to be an estimated 20,000 - 35,000 Brown kiwi left, based on figures between 1996 and 2006, with a population trend of declining.

As of May 2016, the Kea is not listed as endangered.
However the Kea is listed as vulnerable. Which means it is at risk of becoming endangered.

Until 1970, people were rewarded with a cash bounty in New Zealand if they shot one of these birds, because they were seen as a problem to farming industries. As a result of the lower Kea populations, predators have been able to take over their former habitats and make their numbers even lower. Deforestation for agriculture and sheep rearing has also led to the destruction of many Kea habitats.

Nowadays they are protected species and harming one is a criminal offence. Efforts are being made by zoos and wildlife reserves to encourage them to breed more so that their status does not drop to endangered.

Who made the kiwi endangered?

The kiwi is endangered for two main reasons:loss of habitat;new predators.Humans are responsible for both of these.

Why the kiwi is endangered?

Not all species of kiwi are endangered, but the brown kiwi is one that is endangered. The biggest threat to the brown kiwi comes from dogs, feral cats and other imported pets including the stoat, of all things. New Zealand has no native predators. Being a small, flightless bird, its defenses are extremely limited. Many kiwis are also killed every year by unregistered Pig-Hunting dogs (registratrion requires Kiwi Aversion training) and being killed while crossing roads/highways. Loss of habitat due to deforestation and destruction of large tracts of native bush is also endangering the brown kiwi. Not only does this threaten its food sources, but deforestation means the kiwi has fewer places to hide from its many predators. Prior to Europeans coming to New Zealand, the kiwi enjoyed a healthy population.
