I do not know of a specific code in the United States. However, a flourescent fixture should be covered if breaking a bulb would create serious problems, such as in a kitchen, a place where children play, etc. In lieu of covering the whole fixture they manufacture tubes that cover the bulbs themselves for the same purpose.

How do you cap off the outlet if you are replacing a bathroom light fixture but the old one had an electrical outlet?

Answer for USA, Canada and countries running a 60 Hz supply service.By asking this question you are probably not quite ready to take on this particular task. The correct answer to your question will depend on the exact location of the light fixture. If your bathroom light fixture has an outlet in it you will need to make sure that the entire bathroom's electrical circuits are protected by a GFCI circuit breaker. Many homes built before the 1980s have bathrooms which are not protected by a GFCI because the wiring code applicable back then did not require it.If the old light has a built-in outlet you will not need to cap the outlet because it will be removed along with the lighting fixture. As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed. Before you do any work yourself,on electrical circuits, equipment or appliances, always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOBSAFELY AND COMPETENTLYREFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.

Is it within code to hard wire a fluorescant light fixture into a 20 amp branch circuit that is now designated for general use utility receptacles?

It is not good practice in new wiring, but done all the time as part of a retrofit. Use 12 AWG wiring and make sure the circuit is not overloaded.

How do you hook up a light and switch from an existing light?

Add a light to switch from a different circuitI think here your concern is that you don't want change the performance of the circuit to which you add the light.so you have to use a relay or a solid state relay to the circuit and a separate power supply to the light in compliance with all the safety rules.

Can a pull chain light switch be converted to wall switch?

The pull chain on the porcelain light fixture can be converted to a wall switch very easily. You will need to install a new two wire #14 cable from the box the fixture is mounted to now to the new wall switch box. Remove the power to the circuit by shutting that circuit's breaker off. The wire that is connected to the switch in the light fixture is the incoming "hot" wire. Disconnect it and re connect it to the black wire that goes down to the switch. Disconnect the white wire from the old porcelain fixture. For the installation of the porcelain fixture connect the white wire to the silver screw on the new fixture. Now connect the white wire that returns from the switch to the brass coloured screw on the new fixture. Mark this white wire with a small piece of black electrical tape to re identify it as not a neutral (code rule) but a potential "hot" wire. At the switch end make sure that the black wire is connected to the top screw and the re identified white wire (with a black tape marker) is connected to the bottom screw of the switch. Connect the ground wire in the cable to the new switch box and the existing fixture box. Install the switch making sure that the switch is in the off position and that the handle in facing downwards. Install switch plate cover, turn the breaker back on and you are finished. This project is relatively easy to do if there is already an existing wall box close to the pull-chain switch BUT ONLY if it already has the right wiring in it.If there is no such wall box then a new one will have to be installed and wired. If you already know how to do that safely you would not be asking this question here! For some relevant information, please see the related question below about replacing a wall switch by a pull switch. How do you remove the light bulb from the underwater light?

You need to remove the screw that holds the light ring and pull the whole light fixture out of the water and up onto the deck. There should be enough wire wrapped around the back of the light to allow this. Remove the lens, replace the bulb, and reinstall the lens with a new gasket, being careful not to get any water inside the fixture. Wrap the excess wire around the back of the light fixture and replace it in the niche, securing it with the screw. A. I would add: You need to test the GFCI, the wiring of the whole fixture - continuity test. If this is a fairly old fixture - my decision would be to replace the entire assmebly with a new one. If you have no GFCI then would be critical that you add one. And lastly but not least, you should have a pool tech service the light. He will know what to look for and how to correct any situation with your light. If there is something wrong with your light assy. and you do not find it by testing you put yourself and anyone who uses the pool in a great deal of danger if the light should malfunction. The codes specify that anytime you work on a pool light you then need to bring that product to current code. That also includes the main drain grate. Yes if you or a pool tech works on any portion of the pool for repairs the code demands that the main drain be brought to current code requirements. So it is not only a matter of just changing the light bulb and gasket.

How do you replace the light fixture on an in ground swimming pool that doesnt have enough cord to bring it out of the pool?

The whole fixture should be replaced and the new one installed properly. There should be enough cord wrapped around the light in the niche to bring it up to the pool deck. You could drain the pool down, but I don't recommend it. When I see this condition, I don't take chances, I replace the whole light, cord, etc. Its not something to fool around with if you don't know what your doing. A: Call a qualified swimming pool electrician. He will bring the pool light and all related items to the light fixture up to code. This is not a job for an ammature.
