Luckily for you, this type of software exists, unfortunately it's usually accompanied by at STEEP learning curve...and I mean steep in the worst possible way.

If you are familiar with signal flow as it relates to synthesizers, then you'll be a leg up. If you are familiar with modular synthesis, (i.e. the venerable Moog Modular system) then you'll be way ahead of the game.

There are two programs that I would say are the most popular for randomly generated music, or "generative" music, as it is sometimes called. The easier (though still not easy) of the two is Reactor, which is developed by Native Instruments. Reactor is a "virtual modular system". In you are familiar with synthesis, then you will have an easier time with this one. The problem with most synths is that they have a "fixed signal path". The signal always goes in the same direction. This creates several problems: what if you don't like the oscilators? what if you want an extra filer? what if you want the signal to go through the effects section BEFORE it goes to the filter?

The cool thing about Reactor is that you can use hundreds of modules to literally create your own synthesizer or effects processor or sequencer from the ground up. Modules include oscilators, filter, effects, MIDI modules and others...as well as simple math and comparison modules such as addition, multiplication, grater than, etc.

The other program is Max/MSP. Max/MSP is similar in theory, but a LOT more complex. It's actually a fully fledged "graphical" programming environment. If you are familiar with object oriented programming (i.e. C++) then you'll be ahead of the game here. Imagine C++, but instead of typing the modules by hand, you can call in a graphic representing the module and "connect" it to another module. These are low level modules, meaning that it's more difficult to program, but you can do a lot more with it.

There is a third one that I will mention, called SynthMaker. SM isn't so much suited to making generative (random) music, but it could be a good first step toward learning Reactor or Max/MSP.

If you are totally lost, then you can do a quick Google search on any of the terms I mentioned here for more information. Also, each of these programs have demo versions available plus a large and helpful community that will be more than willing to help you along.

I hope I've been able to set you in the right direction.

Good luck!

P.S. A good understanding of algebra and trigonometry will really help with all of these programs. ADDITION FROM Chammusic: Although you can create 'random' music with the above mentioned programs, that is NOT their main purpose! There are better choices around - try searching for 'algorithmic music software' or 'algorithmic composing software'. There's a whole network of this stuff out there, and most of it is genuine freeware.
