Is there a way to approach your mother-in-law who is a compulsive liar if you are tired of listening to her lies?

No, there isn't without hurting her feelings. It depends on how old she is. Perhaps she feels useless and emblishes on certain events to make herself sound/feel important. Although you know she is lying is it so important to you or family that she does as long as she isn't hurting anyone with vicious gossip.
Often if you ask for advice (even though you don't really need it) or ask her for help on a project you are doing this may cease the compulsive lying. It may also be time for a physical check-up to be sure she doesn't have a health disorder. If she is 50 or over she could have the start of dementia, etc., and this can cause paranoia which in turn comes out as lying or untruths of certain events.

Who would care about confronting someone who wasn't hurting anyone with their lies? Make it a point to remind yourself to double check every single fact she tells you, whether it's a personal story or "something she heard". Protecting yourself from her lies is number one priority. Then call her on it. Even small lies can cause friction and resentment over time. It's better to rip the band-aid off quickly, and preferably with witnesses so that she can't misrepresent what happened later and try to use it against you.
