Hotel, motel and resort clerks?

Hotel, motel and resort clerks are a tremendous asset to the travel industry. Thousands of travelers stay in hotels yearly either on business or pleasure. Clerks assist the traveler in finding accommodations to suit the traveler’s needs. Without hotel, motel and resort clerks, finding accommodations would be next to impossible. Hotel, motel and resort clerks are the front end. They answer calls from customers inquiries. They register guests into rooms and check out guests at departure. They report any problems that guests may have either to housekeeping or maintenance. If the hotel or motel serves a continental breakfast, the clerk is responsible for the task of getting the breakfast foods available. The clerks are also responsible for refilling coffee pots, if the hotel offers 24 hour coffee. The clerks may also be responsible for cleaning the breakfast area after the breakfast closes. Many clerks are hired part-time, thus a beneficial job for students. Hotel, motel and resort clerks do not need any formal training. They learn on the job. However, courses in customer service or hospitality may be beneficial. On the job training may include learning about the hotel facilities, and learning how to use the computer reservation system. They may also learn how to use a billing system. Clerks do need to have math skills, as although most guests pay by credit, some still do use cash. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, 230,200 clerks were employed in 2008. That number is expected to grow by 14% in 2018. New hotels, motels, and resorts are always being constructed, especially in high tourist area such as Orlando or Las Vegas. It is this reason why the job prospect is on the rise. The median wage for hotel, motel and resort clerks was $19,820 for 2009. The low end made $15,560 while the high end made $29,220. The wage difference is dependent on if the hotel is high end, or a lower end mote. A high end hotel will pay more than a lower end motel. The wage difference is also dependent on the area. A area with a higher cost of living will pay more than an area with a lower cost of living.

Why would a firm use job order costing?

Fixed cost, being what they are and by nature, fairly consistant job to job (or no job), job order costing would become especially important when the variable costs relative to a job are such that it becomes the only effective way to determine the profitability, if any, of any specific project.
