I'm not sure where it is? But there is a small amount of gold and silver in a computer tower. I just learned that in my computer class just not exactly where at in the computer tower. It's only like $5 to $25, but it might be more now because the price of gold is much higher these days.
Portable hard drives are worth it if you need to take a lot of your data with you away from your computer. Some people use them as a safe back up for their computer system. If you have information that you want to be sure is backed up, then a portable hard drive may be worth it for you.
The physical location of the drive is indeterminate. It could be located inside the computer, it could be located outside the computer, or it could be a network drive in another computer entirely. If you're asking where it will show up in Windows Explorer, it will be in the "My Computer" folder, just like all other lettered drives.
Why would you get rid of anything? If it no longer works and isn't worth fixing or if you no longer have a use for it.

It depends. If the whole computer has been immersed in liquid, pitch it. Individual components such as daughter boards, hard drives, the power supply, the motherboard and memory can all fail on their own. These can all be replaced individually, but may not be worth it.
I would recommend using a backup hard drive. These hard drives can hold up to ten times the typical computer. It may seem a little expensive, but it the long run it is worth it.
