Swine Flu (and other H1N1 flu viruses) is a Type A influenza, but all Type A influenza viruses are not swine flu, or other H1N1 viruses. Swine flu is just one of many subtypes of Type A influenza. Swine Flu is caused by the Type A H1N1/09 Virus.

No, it is not even influenza or a virus. Despite the name, it is actually a bacterium that was once believed to have been the cause of the flu (hence the name) before there was any medical knowledge of viruses. Once viruses were discovered it was learned that influenza is a viral disease and haemophilus influenzae is bacterial. Pneumonia is one of the types of infections that these bacteria cause.

Most common strains of Haemophilus Influenzae cause disease mostly in children under 5 and those with immune system suppression. They can be present in many people much of the time, but do not cause illness unless there are other factors like the two mentioned above.

Other than the pneumonia mentioned above, these bacteria are responsible for other respiratory tract infections, meningitis, infectious Arthritis, ear infections, conjunctivitis, bacteremia, septicemia and many others.

There are vaccines for some types that can help prevent the infections, but the vaccines can be expensive.

Yes, it is the Influenza caused by the Type A H1N1/09 virus.

Are all influenza Type A viruses the Swine Flu?

No, the pandemic A-H1N1/09 "swine flu" is just one of many Type A influenza strains. It is also one of many H1N1 flu subtypes. Besides Type A influenzas, there are also influenza Types B and C in humans.

What type of virus is the H1N1 classified as?

It is a Type A Influenza virus with RNA genome. Also called Swine Flu, the 2009 Pandemic Flu, 2009 Swine Flu, and A-H1N1/09.

What is a H1N1 virus?

Swine flu is a respiratory disease caused by type A influenza virus that regularly causes outbreaks of influenza in pigs. The "classical" swine flu virus (an influenza type A H1N1 virus) was first isolated from a pig in 1930. Swine flu viruses cause illness in pigs, but the death rates are low. This new virus, although it is being called "swine flu," is not the same virus.

What is the difference between Type B flu viruses and the Swine Flu?

They are different types of influenza viruses. Human "Swine flu" (H1N1/09) is caused by Type A viruses.

What is influenza A subtype N1H1?

H1N1 is a grouping of viruses that are subtypes of the Type A Influenza viruses. There are three types of influenza viruses that people get: Type A, Type B, and Type C. The type A H1N1 subtype of viruses are the most common cause of flu in humans (around half of all flu cases in 2006, for example). Some strains of H1N1 are also found to cause disease in other animals such as birds and pigs. The H1N1 subtype has been responsible for some major flu pandemics in recent history, for example, the post-World War 1 Spanish flu in 1918 and the 2009 swine flu pandemic (A-H1N1/09) were both due to Type A H1N1 virus subtypes.See related question below for more information about the virus that caused the 2009 Pandemic: Novel H1N1 Swine Flu also known as A-H1N1/09 virus.

Do artificial colors cause Swine Flu?

No information suggests that there is any connection between the viral infection that causes swine flu and food colors or other artificial colors. Swine flu (H1N1) is caused by a virus (Type A, H1N1/09 influenza virus), as is the "regular" flu.

Is the swine flue a fungus?

Swine Flu A-H1N1/09 is caused by a virus, not by a fungus. The virus is a Type A Influenza strain named A-H1N1/09 or also called the Pandemic Swine Flu virus among other names around the world.

What is N95 in relation to the H1N1 influenza?

It is a type of face mask/respirator that can be worn in some situations to prevent spread of swine flu A-H1N1/09. See the related question below for more information.

What does the A stand for in Influenza A virus?

The A and B in influenza are simply different types of influenza. * Type A: seasonal epidemics. This sub-type is based on changes in surface antigens hemagglutinin and neuraminidase. In humans subtypes H1-H3 and N1-N2 have circulated since 1918 pandemic (due to H1N1). In the last 3 decades the circulating types have been H3N2 and H1N1. * Type B: sporadic outbreaks (long term care facilities)

Is it H1N1 or the H1N1?

It is a flu (influenza) virus. All flus are caused by viruses. A virus is categorized by type such as Influenza Virus Type A, Type B or Type C. Viruses are always changing and mutating, and flu viruses are especially quick in their ability to mutate. When a mutation occurs, they are categorized further as subtypes and then to a finder degree as strains. H1N1 is a subtype of Influenzavirus A. The pandemic swine flu is further identified as A-H1N1/09 indicating the specific mutation of A-H1N1 into the type that caused the pandemic of 2009. Beyond that, the individual strains are broken down and named usually according to the year they were isolated and the location where they were first found. See the related question below for more information on how viruses are named.
