It depends on how you wish to classify them. For example, we can segregate them by the way they are governed. (1) By bishops, as in the Episcopal church (2) by the congregation (as in some Baptist churches) (3) By elected representatives from the congregation responsible to a larger association of churches (the Presbyterians).
They can also be classified by doctrinal heritage, although there is a great deal of blending in this area. Your have those who follow the Reformed tradition as expounded by John Calvin (Presbyterian, Dutch Reformed), those who follow the tradition of Luther (Lutheran), and perhaps those who align with the tradition of "free will" (Baptist). Even these are very tentative groupings, though, so take them with a grain of salt.

Presbyterianism is one denomination within Protestantism.
To stop the spread of Protestantism. The Counter Reformation is a movement of internal renewal as well as a response to the spread of Protestantism.
Protestantism arose after the Middle Ages ended. There were dissidents in the Church of the Middle Ages, including Lollards and Hussites, along with such heretical groups as the Albigensians and Waldensians, but they were not actually Protestant, strictly speaking. They anticipated Protestantism, but were of sufficiently different natures to be considered not the same. There is a link below to an article on the history of Protestantism.
