Drew a line in the sand.

Anywhere North of that line, slavery would be illegal.

This kept the situation balanced, and kept the peace for thirty years.

Unfortunately, the rule only applied to the territories acquired under the Louisiana Purchase.

For the vast new lands brought in after the Mexican war, there had to be a new compromise. This one did not last.
