AnswerWe just bought a dome home that was built in 1984 in northeast Ohio, and it has a basement. Although we have not moved in yet the basement seems to have worked out fine. It does have a sump pump that keeps it nice and dry. The basement is a finished rec. room also. We have seen no foundation problems or anything else that would tell us that it was a bad idea. Hope this helps. AnswerLooking at one for sale that has a basement. The interesting thing is that the basement seems to be "left over" from a rectangular (regular / non dome shaped) house.

It is on a sloped lot, so it is a daylight basement. The bottom of the dome overhangs the concrete foundation about 6 feet on each side. Used as lawn mower storage it looks like.

This is a geodesic. I imagine with a sturdy foundation there is no reason you could not have a monolithic on a basement as well.

AnswerThe last geo-dome I built, a 50' 3/8th's, was built over a daylight basement. which included a 2 car garage, a media room and a "Mother-in-law apartment.

Once the sub floor is down, the dome structure doesn't really care whether it's built over a crawlspace or a basement.

If you do a basement, build it of concrete and NOT pressure treated wood.

Basement excavation is an extensive undertaking. The concrete floor and dirt must be dug out and removed. The costs can be great, and it is helpful to have a crawl space.

It is possible to use a dirt wall when pouring concrete, but the liquid of the concrete will not make neat edges. The wall must be tamped firmly. This will work on shorter projects, but not on taller ones.

Can you install a sink without a drain in a basement?

You must lift the sewage up to the place where the sewer pipe leaves the home. Most homes on level sites connected to septic systems have sewer lines close to grade level because these systems must be built shallow to perform. From the basement, sewage must be lifted up to the exit pipe usually inside the house. Plumbing drains in the basement (and this would apply to a single sink) are directed into a sump or plastic or concrete pit built into the floor of the basement inside a closet or near the outside wall. The sump is flush with the floor and has a sealed lid. In the sump is a grinder pump that grinds the sewage into a slurry and pumps it up to the sewer in a small diameter pipe where it combines with the other household sewage and flows by gravity into the municipal sewer or the septic system. Grinder stations can be installed by any plumber. They occasionally require maintenance, they make a little whirring noise a few minutes after you run water. Basement grinder stations are inferior to a gravity sewer. However many people are very happy with their basement grinders when there is no other alternative.

A Guide to Basement Repair?

The basement is neither a good thing nor a bad thing. Basements can be great places that extend living and storage areas. Properly finished and lit, a basement adds value to the home. More often though, the basement is a dark and damp place. And with good reason, unless it has been properly built and maintained. The basement raises the house off the ground and gives it a firm footing. This necessarily means that the basement is in the ground and subject to the hydraulic pressures of the soil. Water loves nothing more than a hole to flow into and will try to find its way into any basement. Also, the movement of water in the soil surrounding a house is difficult to overestimate. In wet seasons it presses hard against the walls, perhaps even slowly moving them over time. Such foundation wall shifting is very common in built-up foundations consisting of stones or concrete block. It is not as common in the poured concrete foundations of the last 75 years, but cracks due to wall shifting are common in these foundations. Whether a wall shift threatens the stability of the structure or cracks let in water, for a basement to be usable, it must be repaired. Fortunately, there are repairs that can solve almost any problem. There are concretes that can be poured in or sprayed on to stabilize walls and serve as a barrier to direct water intrusion. If the walls are structurally sound, special concretes and epoxies can be used to fill cracks and seal out water. Carefully done, these repairs can begin to salvage the usable space of a basement. Another common problem that warrants attention is the presence of condensed moisture. The walls of the basement stay cool where they are pressed up against the soil. The high humidity of warm weather infiltrating the basement will condense on cool concrete walls and nearby articles.. To repair this problem, insulation and a vapor barrier must be used to isolate the cool temperatures from the warm moist air. Once repairs such as these are completed, the basement can be finished and made into a useful space.
