I don't know how old this question is, but we had a similar problem, it turned out a head gasket was leaking. We've had it replaced and the van has been driven about 500 miles since then without overheating. I'm sure that's not what you wanted to hear, but I would find out if that's the case with yours too.
Two symptoms of faulty thermostat which would more than likely require replacement of same: (1) engine overheats quickly (2) engine takes too long or doesn't reach normal operating temperature
Should be located at the engine end of the upper radiator hose in removable housing
Can be leaking from a hose not secured properly or a hole in the system.
Low coolant Water pump not working properly Cooling fan not working Thermostat not opening fully Radiator plugged or dirty Check the radiator fan.
Before changing the radiator on a 2001 Pontiac Montana the coolant must first be drained. After the drain remove the radiator mounts, fans, and hoses. Pull the radiator upwards.
The thermostat housing is dome shaped at the end of the radiator top hose on the block, and should be near the water pump which is on the front of the engine. Not looked at a Montana lay out so can't help further.. :)
yes it has one
You more than likely have a bad water pump. With the car running, open your radiator cap and see if the water is circulating through the radiator. If not, then your water pump is bad. Hope that helps...
The coolant temp sensor is located on the manifold, just to the left of the thermostat housing on the right side of the engine compartment. They are both located just under the air intake tube that attaches to the throttle body, and it has a small 2 wire connector attached to it. You can follow the upper radiator hose from the radiator to the thermostat housing to locate them. Good luck.
On a 3.4L engine there is a metal adapter bolted to the engine that the upper radiator hose attaches to. It is on the right side and is a nightmare to get to. Many parts must be removed to get the adapter off. The thermostst is inside the adapter.
If it is a plastic radiator and it is stripped, no, if it is metal yes.
