Other than death what can happen to the abused?

• Each type of abuse has its own ugly and long lasting outcome: physical injuries is only one type. But all abused victims are traumatized and often suffer from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).

• An abused person may know, intellectually, what he/she experienced was inappropriate, but if that experience was a "norm" of their prolonged existence, especially during formative years, that person processes himself to exist and respond with survival tecniques applied to that "normal" environment....and this may be such a subtle processing that it is not identified for what it is. Without recognizing why, that person may experience a feeling of being "different" from other people...maybe a feeling of being on the outside looking into life without really being an active participant. I know this is true. I've spent a lifetime accepting abuse as a human frailty...just an expression of one person to another of frustration or insecurity...but I accepted it. Why can't everybody just get along? Why are some people the givers and others only want to take? How can I explain to those who abuse me that they are perpetuating their own fear when they are venting, instead of learning to be productive beyond perpetuating that weakness? I prided myself on being strong enough to survive in spite of bad behavior where I was the target. I felt sorry for them, but I wanted to "help" them understand so they would choose to do differently...and become confident...like me. I'm beginning to realize what I've allowed myself to experience...and that it wasn't necessary for me to save the world while sacrificing myself. My boundaries have tightened as I've realized I don't deserve to be responsible for other people. My welfare and my experience of supportive relationships is more important than the ones who wanted to climb into my warm and tolerant nest...where they did little more than tear up the nest I was constantly rebuilding and fortifying to withstand tantrums. Does that offer a clue about what can happen to someone who was abused?...not a martyr, but a fortified punching bag.

• I absolutely agree witht he above answer.I have been n a relationship for 10 yrs now and always felt that my partner needed to be understood.And I tolerated him for many years inspite of physical abuse on few occassions.I was so confident that he would see things from my perspective but unfortunately that never happened.I also tried to see thro' the phases by being silent so that he would feel ashamed of his doings.But it gave him a wrong picture and he took my resilience as weakness and got more and more controlling.Then i ended up having an internet affair with a married man and my life got messier. Do u still want to know as to what else other than the death can happen to the abused?

• "The abused" is still a person. Anything can happen to a person.
