because they were made to be track cars and the steering wheel often sits between your legs making it hard to get in, so the steering wheel sits up and clicks down into place when you drive.
Put the key in the ignition and keep slight pressure towards the "on" position. Turn the wheel right/left until the key clicks to the "on" position.
when your steering wheel locks it pushes in one direction, if you turn itone way it will stay solid and if you turn it the other way it will move slightlyput your key in the ignition and try to turn it while trying to turn the wheel, you will find a spot when it clicks and its unlocked and you can start the car.
Not sure of this answer, but a friend of mine had a Pontiac late 90's something and the ignition itself went bad (were you turn the key). The smoke smell did not happen though. If you have a lot of keys and keychains hanging on the ignition it will cause it to prematurely go bad. Sorry I cant be more help.
It's all part of the ignition switch assembly. The "Click" is usually the steering wheel lock pin dropping into place.
This sounds like your battery.
most likely your battery is dead or you need a new starter.
Check for bad connections or fusable link
you need a new ignition tumbler.
assuming the battery and cables are good and connected....check the ignition switch..:)
I know about the starter and ignition, but I click the ignition and then it clicks, then when I press and hold the starter it starts then immediatly stalls, I have tried it in neutral, in gear, with clutch, without clutch, with clutch and throttle.
Remove the cowlings from the steering column around the lights/indicator stalks. Insert key and turn to position "I",push in the locking pin on top of the lock barrel with a small screwdriver and withdraw the locking assembly.Take the new lock and set to "I" again,if steering lock was not released before starting the removal, you may need to push down the steering blocking pin with a screwdriver down the hole.Otherwise, just insert the locking assembly until it clicks in.
